Hiring a commercial beauty photographer is one of the most important decisions a brand can make. Get it right and your campaign imagery does the heavy lifting for months. Get it wrong and you're reshooting.
So here's What to look for when hiring a beauty photographer
Skin and texture work Beauty photography lives and dies by skin. Look at a photographer's portfolio closely — not just the overall image, but the quality of the skin retouching, the way light sits on the face, the texture detail. This is where you separate commercial photographers from portrait photographers.

Product in use Can they shoot a model interacting with your product in a way that feels natural rather than staged? This is a skill in itself and not every photographer has it. Look for examples specifically — serum drops, application shots, product held in frame alongside a strong face.

Diversity of models and looks A strong beauty portfolio shows range. Different skin tones, ages, hair textures. If every image in a portfolio looks the same, that's a limitation.
Studio facilities For beauty work, lighting control is everything. A photographer with their own studio — particularly one with an infinity cove and the ability to control natural light — gives you far more flexibility than hiring a location and a photographer separately.
