Studio vs Location Photography — Which is Right for Your Brand Campaign?

Studio vs location Photography? It's one of the first questions to answer when planning a clothing or beauty campaign. The honest answer is that both have their place, and the right choice depends entirely on what you're trying to achieve.

The case for studio A studio gives you complete control. Lighting, background, temperature, timing — none of it is at the mercy of the weather or the season. For beauty work in particular, that control is essential. Skin photography needs precise, consistent lighting that you simply can't guarantee on location.

For clothing, a studio shoot is often the more cost effective option. No location fees, no travel time, no permits. You can turn around more looks in a day because the setup stays consistent between shots.

The case for location Location adds context. A dress in a field tells a story that a dress against a white backdrop can't. If your brand has a lifestyle identity — countryside, coastal, urban — shooting on location reinforces that identity in a way that feels authentic rather than constructed.

The best location work happens when the environment and the clothing feel genuinely connected. That takes preparation — the right location, the right time of day, the right weather window.

  • Location fashion photography for Box2 shot in Malta
  • Fashion location photography for Divine Cashmere
  • Fashion editorial photography shot on location for Velvet Magazine

The honest answer Most brands need both. A campaign typically benefits from a mix — clean studio shots for e-commerce and product clarity, location shots for campaign imagery and social content.

I shoot both from my studio in Northamptonshire and on location across the UK and Europe. If you're planning a campaign and not sure which approach is right for your brand, get in touch at craig-harvey.co.uk and we can talk it through.
